Question: I am preparing to file an EB-2 National Interest Waiver (NIW) petition. Several experts have agreed to provide letters on my behalf, but they would prefer that I write the letter and they will edit and sign it. If I am writing each of the letters, how can I make sure that they are all different enough so that the Service will not suspect that the letters are fraudulent?
Answer: This is a common dilemma for EB-1 and EB-2 NIW petitioners. The experts who are being approached for letters are often very prestigious but very busy people who may not have the time or the inclination to draft a letter themselves, but are more than willing to work from a letter framework and add their own opinions and commentary. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when drafting these letters to ensure that each is a unique statement that provides the Service with a fresh representation of the applicant’s contributions to their field and their importance in that field:
* Keep in mind that each expert will not be equally familiar with the entire body of your work. Reflect on the part of your work with which the expert is most familiar and concentrate the letter on that aspect of your contributions.
* Do not attempt to write all of the letters at the same time. Giving yourself a few days or a week between the drafting of each letter will give you time to “forget” the wording you may have used to describe your various contributions in the last letter and approach the next letter with a fresh mind.
* If English is not your fist language, ask a native speaker who works in your field to help you go over the letters and re-phrase some of the sections that may be giving you trouble.
* Encourage the expert himself to review the letter and make changes as they see fit.
By tailoring each letter to the specific expert who will review and sign it, applicants can provide a comprehensive and well-informed review of their work and expertise through their letters of recommendation.
