San Antonio TX- Research presented today at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s Scientific Congress showed that the vast majority of patients utilizing genetic screening technologies opt not to choose the gender of their child, despite the ease of obtaining the information to do so.
Researchers from Reproductive Medical Associates of New York examined 5 years’ worth of decisions made by patients undergoing various forms of Pre-Implantation Genetic Screening (PGS). Only 18% of the nearly 500 couples in the study used gender as criteria for choosing which of their embryos to transfer. 82% indicated no preference. Of the patients who did express a gender preference, over 2/3, 68% chose female embryos.
“There are a lot of assumptions made about how patients will use technologies like PGS. This study shows that many of those assumptions, and the fears they generate, may be unfounded,” stated Kevin Doody, MD, President of the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology.
